Way, way, way back in the days of yore, a little game called Worms appeared which took turn based combat into new realms with super-sadistic weaponry, bags of humour and gameplay that was to die for. Needless to say, this side-on, 2D fun fest spawned many an update before making the jump to 3D where it received mixed reviews. The official launch of PlayStation 2 was on Main Japan, and on October 26th of the same year in the United States. ![]() It has to be said that the Worms games must surely be one of the most successful and enduring franchises out there as they have crossed onto nearly every platform going… I even have a copy on my PDA for those dull train journeys! So anyway, let’s come up to date with Worms 4: Mayhem, the latest effort from the Codemasters. ![]() Worms has since undergone a major transition it's now a fully 3D game.Is it a case of Holy Hand Grenade or more of a dud mine? Read on and see. Since the release of Worms 3D last May, players must take into account how the wind will push their projectiles left and right in addition to determining the correct height at which they should fire. In addition, players must be much more aware of where they are on the battlefield, since they can now be assaulted from all sides and from multiple tiers of a level. The 3D aspect also allows player to bank projectiles such as grenades against walls and over railings. So what's new with Worms 4: Mayhem? A few new weapons have been added, namely a tail nail, a poison arrow, and a sniper rifle. The sniper rifle was the biggest draw for us, and we immediately took control of it on the first of the game's challenge modes. In the the sniper challenge, we were placed on the roof of a large cruise boat and assigned the task of shooting a bunch of targets that appear in and around a cowboy-style backdrop. The targets appear one after the other, you just need to shoot them down to get the next one to pop up. To shoot, your view zooms into a first person view through the sniper scope. Yet, even with such a precise targeting reticule and the ability to zoom in further, it was still amazingly difficult to get something lined up properly. This is understandable, though, since if a sniper rifle in the single player missions or multiplayer modes were able to quickly target the enemy, it would completely ruin the game's weapon balance. After all, even the holy hand grenade misses every once in a while. ![]() and something.Īfter an embarrassingly long length of time, we finally got through all the targets and were awarded 20 coins. Other challenges include the Jet Pack Challenge where you fly around a level collecting crates, the Super Sheep Challenge where you use your super sheep to collect crates, and the Icarus Potion Challenge where you fly around a level collecting crates. We also couldn't resist booting up the shotgun challenge, but it turned out to be almost the same thing as the sniper challenge, just much harder since we couldn't zoom. The money you earn for completing the various challenges can be thereafter used in an item shop that's accessible form the main menu. While there, you can buy a wide range of items to dress up your worms to look even more insane than they already do. You can buy worm hats, spectacles, new gloves, weapons, songs, and gamestyles. Once you start unlocking some of these items, you can go use them in the game's extensive team, weapon, and game mode creation tools. We immediately went in to create our own weapon as soon as we discovered the feature, and of course massively cranked up every single parameter. Some of the ways you can mod your gun include changing the body to look like a ray gun, a revolver, or a bazooka, changing the scope on top, changing the stock, as well as applying different skins. After you choose what it looks like, you can alter what kind of damage it does. It can be a cluster weapon, meaning it can detonate before the target and pepper them with several smaller explosive, or you can designate it as a simple blast radius effect. You can further augment and alter how your gun will damage the enemy by specifying the method by which it will explode, either on impact or on delay.
